The ridge trail between Madeira’s high peaks is one of Europe’s great day hikes.

Is the trail open?

Its status has changed several times in recent years because of wildfire damage and maintenance. Always check the official Madeira trail status page on the day.

How hard is the hike?

Strenuous. Expect many steps, steep sections, tunnels and exposed drops. It is not suitable if you are uncomfortable with heights.

How long does it take?

Several hours one way. Many hikers arrange a transfer from Achada do Teixeira at the Pico Ruivo end rather than walking back.
